Development and Validation of an Advanced Actuator Line Model for Wind Turbines

چکیده

As wind turbine technology proceeds towards the development of more advanced and complex machines, modelling tools with fidelity higher than ubiquitous Blade Element Momentum (BEM) method are needed. Among them, Actuator Line Method (ALM) stands out in terms accuracy computational cost. Moving from this background, an ALM has been developed within commercial solver CONVERGE®. elements novelty, tool features a Lagrangian for sampling local inflow velocity piece-wise smearing function force projection process. Various sub-models both Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines (HAWTs) (e.g. Shen tip loss correction) Vertical (VAWTs) MIT dynamic stall model) also included. Aim research is to address new challenges posed by modern machines. HAWTs fact getting larger larger, shifting focus on interaction increasingly deformable blades atmosphere at micro- mesoscale level. VAWTs other hand, whose popularity arisen last years, thanks their advantages non-conventional applications, e.g. floating offshore installations, extremely machines study, due inherently unsteady aerodynamics. The approach validated selected test cases, i.e. DTU 10MW real 2-blade H-rotor, which high-fidelity CFD experimental data available.

Actuator line modeling of vertical-axis turbines

To bridge the gap between high and low fidelity numerical modeling tools for vertical-axis (or cross-flow) turbines (VATs or CFTs), an actuator line model (ALM) was developed and validated for both a high and a medium solidity vertical-axis turbine at rotor diameter Reynolds numbersReD ∼ 10. The ALM is a combination of classical blade element theory and Navier–Stokes based flow models, and in t...

An occupational risk assessment approach for construction and operation period of wind turbines

As wind energy is one of the most important renewable energy sources over the globe, need for increasing safety for this type of energy is gaining importance. Although this sector is not suffering an excessive amount of fatal injury accidents, there are many aspects open for improvements in occupational health and safety management. The construction and operation processes of wind turbines incl...
